And This Is Why…Updated

Friday, July 31st, 2009

People are understandably wary about the government handling our health insurance. That would be the CLUNKER program. I trust you have heard about this? If not, here is a short review:

Okay. I can see some wisdom in that. It is great to get these old gas guzzlers off the road, recycle the vehicles, have people driving new, more efficient vehicles, and helping out the automobile industry. Not bad! Oh, but wait. Maybe it’s bad for the taxpayers, and those who have been more energy conscious all along:

Well, there’s a problem. Not to mention that many people will not be putting the money back into the AMERICAN automakers’ pocket, but foreign automakers who are making affordable, fuel efficient vehicles. So there is that.

But here’s a HUGE problem: The program is already broke. I am not kidding you. In FOUR days, the program has expended ALL of the money, $1 BILLION dollars, allocated to it. I guess that’s a good news/bad news kind of thing. It worked, but now the funds have gone * poof *! There’s hope, though:

A source told FOX News that senior Congressional leaders, the Obama administration and other lawmakers involved with the program are exploring potential options to either undertake administrative or possibly even Congressional action to infuse the program with cash.

Lawmakers were examining whether there was a possible avenue to provide much-needed reserves for the program as early as Friday.

Rep. Ed Markey, D.- Mass., co-author of the cash for clunkers provision, pledged to work with the Obama administration to ensure the program continues.

“Cash for Clunkers may have run out of cash, but America’s consumers haven’t run out of clunkers. We’re going to work with the Obama administration to keep this wildly successful program going until it reaches its goal of helping consumers take 1 million gas guzzlers off the road,” he said.

Like I said, glad the program was successful for the consumers for all of four days.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t TOTALLY successful:

A survey of 2,000 dealers by the National Automobile Dealers Association found about 25,000 deals had not yet been approved by NHTSA, or nearly 13 trades per store. It raised concerns that with about 23,000 dealers taking part in the program, auto dealers may already have surpassed the 250,000 vehicle sales funded by the $1 billion program.

“There’s a significant backlog of ‘cash for clunkers’ deals that make us question how much funding is still available in the program,” said Bailey Wood, a spokesman for the dealers association.

Alan Helfman, general manager of River Oaks Chrysler Jeep in Houston, said he was worried that the government wouldn’t pay for some of the clunker deals his dealership has signed because they aren’t far enough along in the process.

His dealership has done paperwork on about 20 sales under the clunker program, but in some cases the titles haven’t been obtained yet or the vehicles aren’t yet on his lot.

“There’s no doubt I’m going to get hammered on a deal or two,” Helfman said.

Oops. Sorry, dealers!

So the dealers are left holding the bag. They may get reimbursed, or they may not. Who knows?

But what does that say about how the government will manage HEALTH care?? That’s just a tad more serious for many, many people - getting in to see their doctors, or having surgery - than trading in an old car. Nice program and all, but if they cannot handle that without huge complications in the very first week, running out of money, how in the world can we trust them to do right by us in terms of our HEALTH?? Sure gives one pause, doesn’t it?

UPDATE: The House has just voted to give an additional $2 Billion to this program. Well, gosh - maybe it will last a whole week then, especially if you figure there are lots of dealers who haven’t been paid for the first four days…

What Happens When You Soak the Rich?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

(bumped up from late Thursday night)

If you tax policy is to “soak” the rich the reality is that the poor get fucked. Very simple. Maryland’s Governor, apparently ignorant of the basic laws of economics, decided the best approach was to slap on an additonal 1.25% tax on folks who make more than a million dollars.

Look at what has happened:

One of Maryland’s budget-balancing tactics - asking millionaires to pay more money to the state - appears to be backfiring as the number of the highest-earning taxpayers dwindles with the flagging economy.

A year ago, Maryland became one of the first states in the nation to create a higher tax bracket for millionaires as part of a broader package of maneuvers intended to help balance the state’s finances and make the tax code more progressive.

But as the state comptroller’s office sifts through this year’s returns, it is finding that the number of Marylanders with more than $1 million in taxable income who filed by the end of April has fallen by one-third, to about 2,000. Taxes collected from those returns as of last month have declined by roughly $100 million.

Many taxpayers in that bracket likely filed an extension and won’t complete their returns until October, but a trend is emerging that indicates a “substantial decline” in the number of residents and small businesses with that kind of income, Comptroller Peter Franchot wrote in a letter to Gov. Martin O’Malley and legislative leaders.

“The revenue figures are ugly,” Franchot said in an interview. “Right now, we’re digging through a pile of tax returns and trying to understand this.”

The recession provides an obvious explanation. Capital gains have become almost nonexistent as stock markets have tanked. Corporate executives have seen their salaries slashed. And small businesses, many of whom file individual income tax returns, have seen their profits gouged by the economic downturn.

Another more debatable explanation would be that millionaires have simply fled the Free State. While some say they have heard anecdotal evidence of the wealthy packing it up, officials say there’s no proof yet of such a development.

A close friend of mine, who made more than $1 million dollars this year has left Maryland. He has moved to a state with no income tax (options are Florida, Texas, Nevada, Alaska, Washington and New Hampshire.

The idiot politicians forget than people with money can afford to move. How losing more than $100 million is good for the average citizen of Maryland beats the hell out of me.

Here’s Racism

Justin Barrett, a two-year police officer and national guard captain, has been suspended by both the Boston Police Department and by the Massachusetts National Guard for his e-mailed letter to a Boston Globe columnist. Barrett wrote:

“Gates is a goddamned fool, and you the article writer simply a poor follower and maybe worse, a poor writer. Your article title should read ‘CONDUCT UNBECOMING A JUNGLE MONKEY-BACK TO ONE’S ROOTS’.”

As you’ll see in the screenshot of his typed letter, he used the term “jungle monkey” more than once, including referring to Professor Gates’ behavior as that of a “banana-eating jungle monkey”:

The Boston Globe reports:

Barrett, a 36-year-old who has been on the job for two years, was stripped of his gun and badge yesterday and faces a termination hearing in the next week, said police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll. He has no previous disciplinary record, she said. “Yesterday afternoon, Commissioner Davis was made aware that Officer Barrett was the author of correspondence which included racially charged language,” she said. “At that time, Commissioner Davis immediately stripped Officer Barrett of his gun and badge, and at this time we will be moving forward with the hearing process.”

[...][Mayor Thomas M.] Menino said he was angry when Davis informed him of the incident Tuesday night. Of the suspended officer, Menino said he told Davis: “He has no place in this department and we have to take his badge away. That stuff doesn’t belong in our city and we’re not going to tolerate it.” The mayor stressed that the incident was about one officer, and ”one officer doesn’t make up a police department.”

Menino, speaking to the Globe before an evening event in the South End, said he hadn’t seen the e-mail Menino said while the officer is not officially terminated, he might as well be “He’s gone, g-o-n-e. I don’t care, it’s like cancer, you don’t keep those cancers around.”

Along with his suspension, Barrett was also reprimanded by the Massachusetts National Guard:

The Massachusetts National Guard does not and will not tolerate racially insensitive language.

The language contained in the e-mail violates policies of the Massachusetts National Guard and what it stands for in its commitment to uphold and protect the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Constitution of the United States.

Capt. Justin Barrett’s actions and opinions are his own and do not reflect those of the Massachusetts National Guard. Capt. Barrett’s opinions are in complete violation of Army and National Guard Values and will not be tolerated.

Barrett is not just a racist. He’s plain stupid.

Even the most hardcore racists would know better than to write an e-mail to a newspaper using that kind of language.

He’s offering excuses, including a claim that he didn’t intend to be racist, and he has apologized. But his words ring hollow, and he ought to know it.

Script.
George Mitchell’s mission to Damascus is part of the script by the White House Politburo to construct an appeasement to Tehran.

The plan was put in place after POTUS visit to Riyadh in June. The next step is to offer the criminal Assad regime in Damascus a return of the U.S. ambassador.

The White House plan is advanced. The confusion is how to negotiate with Tehran after the usurper Ahmadinejad regime stands as discredited.  Tehran source from the Diaspora reports that the usurper Ahmadinejad is consolidating the security forces.

Unconfirmed report that the head of the Ministry of Information and Security (the secret police) has been replaced by the head of the Basiji, the para military brownshirts.  The Tehran regime is brittle, turbulent, perilous, unrepentant, adamant, sinister.

Jerusalem Watches.
Major Jerusalem source points to irregular activities in Bekaa by a now re-armed Hizballah, which operates freely while the UN supervised watchdogs look the other way.

The concern is that Tehran needs to relieve the twinned pressures of the resistance in the streets and the UN sanctions. A blantant and effective diversion would be Hizballah rocketing of northern Israel. Nothing in Gaza has been rebuilt since the conflict December and January.

However Hamas is fully re-armed with short and long range rockets. Jerusalem source points to continuing maneuvers by the IDF and IAAF and the Israeli Navy. Preparations for several scenarios continue.

May-June joblessness up in 90 pct of metro areas

Unemployment rates rose from May to June in 348 of more than 370 metro areas, according to an Associated Press analysis of Labor Department data released Wednesday.

Here are some of the “hottest” areas:

Michigan’s metro area of Detroit-Warren-Livonia posted the second-biggest monthly gain. The unemployment rate there climbed to 17.1 percent, a gain of 2.2 percentage points. [...]

Kokomo, Ind., suffered the biggest over-the-year gain in unemployment. Its rate rose to 19.2 percent in June, an increase of 11.8 percentage points from June 2008. Elkhart-Goshen had the second-largest gain. Its jobless rate of 16.8 percent was up 10 percentage points from last year. Monroe, Mich., the third-biggest gainer, registered an unemployment rate of 17.1 percent in June, up 8.6 percentage points from a year ago.

[...]

Indiana’s Elkhart-Goshen, which has been pounded by layoffs in the RV industry. Its jobless rate dropped to 16.8 percent in June, from 17.5 percent in May.

Maybe If We Leave It To The Women?

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I got an email recently from an organization that has impressed me, VoteVets.org. As their name implies, they work hard on behalf of our veterans. They work not just on behalf of our veterans, but all those currently serving in the military. The email was on the issue of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which VoteVets.org wants repealed, and has been actively pursuing to achieve that end. You know I could not agree more.

So, I was reading the email, thinking, “hey, this is a really nice email. I wonder who wrote it?” And then I got to just who it was. Check it out:

The military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy is an unjust, outdated, and harmful rule that violates the civil rights of some of our bravest, most heroic men and women.

That’s why I have been working, along with my colleagues in the Senate and so many of you, to overturn this wasteful and destructive policy.

Today, I have great news: Senator Carl Levin, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, has agreed to hold the first Senate hearings on repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell this Fall.

We have to prepare for these hearings, so I’m launching a nationwide call to action and need the help of everyone at VoteVets.org. My goal is to get thousands of people to stand with me and show that this country is ready to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

Open Thread: “Obama’s Ratings Slide Across the Board” (Pew Research)

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

From Pew Research Center, via Memeorandum.com: “The Economy, Health Care Reform and Gates Grease the Skids — Barack Obama’s approval ratings have suffered major declines. The president’s overall job approval number fell from 61% in mid-June to 54% currently.”

Here’s a suggestion: Why doesn’t President Obama talk about creating JOBS instead of repetitively using the same tired talking points about health care without ever explaining to Americans how his health care bill will help the economy, let alone create jobs. As a panelist on Bret Baier’s Special Report said yesterday, “Obama has EXHAUSTED his bully pulpit on health care reform.” Americans want to know what Obama is doing about creating JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.

It’s obvious to us who are cynics that Obama’s preoccupation with health care has to do with building a historic legacy, and not what the American people need most right now.

Check out the Weekly Standard’s Daily Grind for more on why Obama’s ratings are dropping.

What say you?

While Obama Continues to Erect Roadblocks, Congress Presses to End “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” Policy

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

The only reason I’m writing this story about gays in the military instead of the true expert, Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy, who’s hammered President Obama for not carrying through with his campaign promises to revoke “don’t ask don’t tell” — is that I happened to catch a segment on upcoming Armed Services hearing to end the discriminatory practice on yesterday’s new MSNBC show, “Morning Meeting.” (By the way, stay tuned for Amy’s upcoming “action” post later today.)

UPDATE: I had the story below ready to publish since I need to leave, but ran across this video from MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show last night. So I’m adding this video without accompanying text because Maddow does such a great job of explaining not only Obama’s failure to live up to his campaign promises but also another instance of Obama’s thwarting of legislation to end “don’t ask don’t tell”:

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

Amy has found that Obama’s failure to issue an executive order (”stop loss”) or direct Congress has led to 230 service members being kicked out of the military under the policy since Obama took office. Despite Obama’s aversion to “hot button” issues, action may be taken soon. Following Congress’s August recess, the Senate Armed Services Committee will hold a hearing on “don’t ask don’t tell.” A member of the committee, Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, who was appointed to fill Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s seat, is the force behind the push for Congressional action and convinced Chair Carl Levin to hold the hearing.

“Morning Meeting” devoted a full-panel segment to getting rid of “don’t ask don’t tell” and joining all of our allies in permitting gays to serve openly in the military. During the “Meeting” segment, the most clear, “let’s cut to the chase” advocate for permitting gays to serve in the military was the reserved-looking, older Gen. Barry McCaffrey (retired), an analyst for NBC and MSNBC News. (See the MSNBC.com bio of Gen. McCaffrey. The photo is from Wikipedia’s bio.)

225px-barry_mccaffrey-sThere’s no video of the segment so I transcribed what Gen. McCaffrey said: “Whether the military wants to do it or not is irrelevant. The question is: Is private consensual homosexual behavior legal or not? The Supreme Court seems to have said a decade ago that states couldn’t pass laws affecting private consensual homosexual behavior.

Gen. McCaffrey stated firmly that Congress “ought to step up to it” and change the law. The rest of Morning Meeting panel also said that Obama shouldn’t bother with a “stop loss” order (a half-measure), and instead demand that Congress change the law.

Of course, as Reverend Amy has told us, Obama is ducking the issue despite his campaign promises, and has taken no action of any kind.

Why Obama is so wary of the issue is unclear (unless it’s to appease his ultra-religious, vociferously anti-gay constituencies, including his old Chicago minister pals like Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Father Michael Pfleger, Rev. Otis Moss, and Rev. James Meeks). Obama’s reticence can’t be due to voters’ attitudes since “Morning Meeting” noted that a recent poll found that two-thirds of Americans approve of allowing gays to serve freely in the military.

unfriendly-fire-sIncluded early in the segment was Dr. Nathaniel Franken, author of “Unfriendly Fire: How the Gay Ban Undermines the Military and Weakens America” (Kindle edition). Dr. Franken pointed out that, under the current “don’t ask don’t tell” policy, over 13,000 service members have been discharged, including 1,000 “mission critical specialists,” 300 linguists and 60 Arab linguists.

“This is a national security emergency. It’s not just a gay rights issue. And President Obama does have the power to issue an executive order,” Dr. Franken continued. (Read more about Dr. Franken’s views in Amy’s June post.)

The “Morning Meeting” panelists concurred that if Obama is going to “take a hit” for issuing a stop-loss executive order, he might as well go all the way and compel Congress to enact a law to do away with discrimination against gays. But Obama hasn’t done a thing so far and shows no signs of taking actions.

In Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy’s story, “Stop Making Excuses For This Guy!!,” she takes on the gays who are still backing Obama:

Repeal the law - it cannot POSSIBLY take that long. Like I said, look how fast Obama got some other things done he wanted done. If he wanted this law repealed already, he would have. Rather, Obama chose to not even weigh in on this to the Supreme Court. LOOK AT THE FACTS, not the rhetoric!

Here’s the bottom line to the LGBT community: STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR THIS GUY. Stop humiliating yourselves hoping, crossing your fingers, and wishing that Obama is going to do right by you because he said he would, or because you think he’s “dreamy.” Had you opened your eyes and paid attention to his actions (or lack thereof) over the course of his political career, or the people with whom he chooses to surround himself, you wouldn’t have picked the guy you thought was “cool.” You would have supported the person who has stood with YOU for years. But you didn’t. And here we are, no farther along for it.

Aren’t you TIRED of begging for the crumbs to drop from the table?? Aren’t you ready to be a guest at the table, where you belong?? All the excuses in the world for Obama do nothing but let him off the hook, and diminish YOU. Seriously, you, we, deserve better. Deep down inside, you must know that is true. At least I HOPE you do…

This section from “Passing the Buck,” exposes the real Obama:

Once again, Obama has found a way to NOT let the buck stop with him - he is proving to be quite adept at finding a way to not take a stand on stands he has previously taken. I know - it makes my head hurt, too, but that’s the reality of it. The title of this article really says it all: Obama Avoids Test on Gays in Military. Uh, yeah. You may recall that I wrote just recently about the Army Arabic linguist, Lt. Dan Choi, and his plea to Obama to not fire him from the Army (“Freedom’s Just Another Word…”).

Well, get this:

The Obama administration has decided to accept an appeals-court ruling that could undermine the military’s ban on service members found to be gay.

A federal appeals court in San Francisco last year ruled that the government must justify the expulsion of a decorated officer solely because she is a lesbian. The court rejected government arguments that the law banning gays in the military should have a blanket application, and that officials shouldn’t be required to argue the merits in her individual case.

The administration let pass a May 3 deadline to appeal to the Supreme Court. That means the case will be returned to the district court, and administration officials said they will continue to defend the law there.

The move comes as President Barack Obama attempts a balancing act on gay rights. He was elected with strong support from the gay community and promised action on a number of issues. But mindful of the complex politics, the White House has moved slowly.

Um, no - a glacier moves slowly. Obama hasn’t moved at all: … (Read all.)

Um, no - a glacier moves slowly. Obama hasn’t moved at all:

Amy, you crack me up even while you’re talking about a truly serious story that affects national security because the military is dismissing desperately needed Arab linguists and other “mission critical specialists.”

Since 2/3rds of the American people back the open inclusion of gays in the military, this action is not hazardous politically and should be taken care of right away. Get with the program, President Obama.

Cutting Health Care Costs: New Plan for Seniors

(bumped up from the morning of July 29th)

webrrreaperground_edited-4

My recent toon, Are Grandma and Grandpa the Target? presented the full text of what will be in store for those over 65 years of age. You won’t hear much about this in the MSM, of course.

HARP made a quick comment to that toon: The reaper is cheaper. An image sprang into my mind, and I wanted to create it and share it. (Thanks, HARP, for the inspiration.)

Before you suggest that I am a scare-mongering right-wingnut plant, please read the full text for yourself. (That will be more than many members of the House are apparently willing to do.) If you can’t fully understand it, you are not alone. It reads as ominous and intrusive in a muddled, sneaky sort of way, and it scares the shit out of me!

Quick Update: I am listening to Obama’s virtual Town Hall meeting as I write, and he is assuring everyone that Medicare benefits will not be cut (even though he has said that billions will be cut over the next 10 years). But the question I am asking did come up. His answer was vague–he THINKS that the death counseling is meant to be available only for those who ask for it (the current House draft says no such thing) and adds that if people are worried, it could be changed. Time to write your congressional rep, and at least ask that this section be clarified. It is incomprehensible as it stands.
